What is AI anyway?

At its core, today’s AI—which is mainly large language models—are prediction calculators trained on vast datasets. They predict the next word in a sequence, learning preferences and patterns from the entire internet.

Language is magical; the written word a proxy for thought. Predicting the next word is more powerful than we thought in terms of convincingly emulating a thought process. But, convincingly is the key… is it actually “thinking”?
